Sorry I missed you guys last week. I was in bed with a nasty cold. I am happy to report I have made the transition from zombie back to human. There was a lot of boring broth soups, not that I could taste anything, but now I’m ready for solid flavorful food. I think I’ll start with one of these!
I haven’t had a Sloppy Joe since I was a kid. That was, of course, until I made these a few weeks ago. I’m still using up the ground beef I have in the freezer and I started looking for recipes. I came across this one over at The Pioneer Woman. If you need to make some beef, Ree’s your gal! I made a few tweaks to her recipe and it turned out great. I see this dish making it into our regular rotation. It’s perfect for a weeknight meal since it only takes about 30 minutes to throw together. Not to mention it’s far better than that stuff that comes out of a can. Sorry to be bossy but, NO! Make your own, okay? Good talk! Now here’s how to do it.
Start off by browning your ground beef over medium-high heat in a large pan. Make sure to drain off the fat once it’s done cooking. Mine was pretty lean so there was not much left over.
Add in onion and cook for about 3 minutes until the onions start to soften.
Pour in water.
Then, add in ketchup and garlic and stir it all together.
Add in the brown sugar, chili powder, dry mustard, red pepper flakes, hot sauce, Worcestershire and salt and pepper. Give it a quick taste to make sure it’s seasoned well. Pop on a lid, drop the heat down to medium-low and continue cooking for 20 minutes.
While the meat is cooking, butter up some buns and brown on a griddle. A skillet will work just fine too. We decided to try hot dog buns to see it if was less messy and it was kind of perfect! It didn’t slip and slide as much and was easier to handle.
Place the toasted bun on a plate.
Load it up with a good amount of the meat mixture. Enjoy!
Have a lovely weekend friends!
